Off The Couch To Victory

Jason Couch was a retired Hall of Fame Bowler. We say was because he came out of retirement to notch a win at the PBA Gene Carter Pro-Shop Classic.

If you watched Couch bowl you'd have never known that he hasn't competed professionally for years. Couch came out on top of a field of 171 participants from 18 states and showed everyone that he can still bowl with the best of them.

When asked about his performance Couch said,"It wasn't expected and I had not really trained a lot but it makes me feel really good!" Couch also talk about the super-regional tourney being neck-and-neck and narrowly edging out Ryan Shafer in the 10th frame. For Couch the win was his 26th career PBA regional title and the $15,000 first-prize purse is more money than he could make hustling people at the local lanes.

When asked about the tight win in the final frame Couch said, "I feel for him because we are good friends, too — but he has never beaten me in a title match or a tournament,"  Couch is well known for his bowling accomplishments as he's the only bowler in PBA history to win three consecutive Tournament of Champions titles a feat he accomplished from 1999-2002.  He was also named PBA Rookie of the Year in 1992 and won 16 PBA Tour titles.

Hanging Them Up

Couch who was ranked 24th on the list of 50 Greatest Players in PBA History chose to retire in 2009. He was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 2012 and the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 2013. Couch's bad knee was the primary reason for his retirement. "I plan on doing some events, especially the Tournament of Champions in March, but this doesn't mean I am coming out of retirement fully," Couch said. "I am bone on bone on my right knee right now, but everything fell into place at the right time at this event and it was just great to bowl without pain for a change."

He's been busy with his wife and kids since his retirement. Couch plays golf as much as he can, watches the Washington Redskins and Florida Gator, all while working as a district sales manager for Ebonite International.

"I love having this time with my family and do not miss living out of a suitcase all of the time," Couch said. "But I still gotta pinch myself sometimes to feel how lucky I have been." We tip our cap to Jason Couch and glad he was able to show everyone why he's in the Hall of Fame!
