Roto Grip Idol
The Roto Grip Idol bowling ball begins the next generation of upper mid-performance bowling balls. This ball introduces the Ikon core which helps provide good backend by pushing the limits of a symmetrical core. This ball also introduces the MicroTrax-S18 Solid Reactive coverstock. This cover uses Nano technology and provides more traction and is more aggressive than previous coverstocks in this line. This ball is ideally used on medium to heavy oil conditions.*There will be some variance in color due to the Nano material. This is due to "phasing". Some of the balls with phasing have a white color in them and some may appear to have water spots. There may be a variety of hues of the Magenta/Purplish color.

The only difference between the two balls will be the grit finish. The Phaze II will have a 3000 grit finish giving it more length than the Roto Grip Idol. The Roto Grip Idol will have a 2000 grit finish, giving it less length.

There are several key differences between this and the All-Out Show Off. This ball has a solid cover with a duller 2000 grit finish which will make this ball read earlier on the lanes and it can grip better so it will handle more oil. The All-Out Show Off is a hybrid cover with a polished finish to make it go longer on the lanes and be sharper on the backend.

The coverstock is not any thinner on this ball than most of the performance balls. If a ball cracks it is more than likely a defect in the ball and how that specific ball was made but it is not something that would be on every ball. If the cracks are around the finger holes it could also be from the insert glue that is used to glue in the inserts or slugs in the ball. Too much of the insert glue can leave the cover brittle near the finger hole and it sometimes results in small spiderweb cracks around the finger holes. They will not likely get worse and the ball should still function with no problems.

The only difference between the two would be the lane conditions. The Sure Lock is for Heavy oil lane conditions only and the Idol is for medium-heavy lane conditions. The Idol would give you more range with the lane conditions and the Sure Lock is limited to only heavy oil lane conditions.

The Idol will read the lane much earlier and have a smoother hook down the lane. The Idol Pearl is designed to go longer with an angular backend hook. That is really the only difference is the length of the ball.

If you are used to throwing a urethane, then this might be a bit different for you. This will have a solid reactive coverstock. It will break sooner than most bowling balls. This will have a powerful overall hook.

The biggest difference is the cover and finish. The Idol Pro has a newer solid cover which is a little stronger but it is also finished with a little smoother grit to go a little longer on the lanes. The Idol has a duller finish to give it more grip and it will read a little earlier on the lanes.

The Show Off was a mid performance ball so it was going to be much weaker than the Halo which is a high performance ball. They were both finished at 2000 Grit so they read the midlane well but because the Halo is so much stronger it was more designed for heavy oil. The Show Off was good in medium oil and would work in medium oil about the same as the Halo works in heavy oil. The Roto Grip Idol is the perfect balance in between the Show Off and the Halo in the upper mid performance line and it would have a very similar read with the same 2000 grit finish.

Since you ball speed matches your rev rate you could technically use either option and be fine. However, usually for a lower ball speed it is better to get a ball that goes longer on the lanes before reacting so I would give an edge to the Halo Pearl over the Idol.

Yes, with any performance ball you can usually adjust the coverstock and by going to a smoother finish you will give the ball a little more length. If you only go to 3000 grit you should not see a huge difference in performance. If you were to add polish to the cover then you would see a more noticeable change and it would probably work more for medium oil only at that point. The ball will still have a good finish when you adjust the cover, it will just break later on the lanes. It is possible a pro bowler used this recently but I am not sure which event you were watching to be sure it was the same ball they used. If you are dropping from 15 or 16lbs down to 14lbs you will notice a difference in the carry but if you create more entry angle to the pocket you will make up for the weight difference.

The Magenta will have a slightly duller finish out of the box to react a little earlier and smoother and the greenish blue ( Idol Pro ) will go a little longer. That difference in length is the biggest difference.
