Pros:

Very predictable symmetrical core, works with many drilling patterns, fragrance, price, reacts predictably to grit/surface changes

Cons:

Limited/low hook potential

Best Uses:

Dry-Medium oil, league, house shot

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Consistent and great for a hook beginner

I had begun to learn to hook a plastic house ball about a month before purchasing this ball and had been using a two handed grip to get high revs. I was inconsistent with my two handed release and accuracy. I purchased this ball, a 12lb pink and purple surge, to learn how to hook with a one handed grip. I was nervous when I first bought the ball thinking it was going to be too light or not right for my local lane conditions. I got this ball drilled and bowled poorly the first time out. Once I worked up some strength in my forearm in order to hold and release the ball properly this ball worked with me well to give consistent motion down the lane on every throw. This ball works great on medium to light oil. In medium oil the ball gets less hook but with some adjustment you can still hit the pocket, but are limited to where you can throw from. Don't expect big angles and big sweeps at the back of the pattern with this ball unless you have very high rev rate. With changing the grit or taking off the polish you can get this ball to pick up a bit more in medium oil and still get some good motion on the lane. I recommend this ball for beginners like me, it gives consistent motion and is a good ball to learn about how ball speed, angle of release, and rev rate all have on ball motion on the lane. Don't be afraid to buy a ball less than 15lbs! It is much harder to learn a proper one handed ball release on a ball that is too heavy for you. It takes time to build the muscles in your forearm used to lift up the ball with your wrist. At 12lbs this ball still strikes and has good pin carry. You can go up in weight on your second ball purchase if you stick with bowling and want to upgrade to a mid performance ball! I hope this review is helpful!

Question:

How does this ball compared to the storm tropical storm? Would it be better or worse for a beginning straight bowler?

10/1/2019 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

This is very comparable to a Storm Tropical and there would not be much difference in the performance. Both are designed to have a little hook potential so if you wanted to get a ball for bowling straight you could get the Ice Storm or one of the Storm Mix balls and they would be better for straight bowling.

Question:

I want the ball to weigh ten lbs when drilled so should i order 10bl ball

10/2/2019 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

Usually the ball will come a couple of ounces over the weight selected but if you wanted to be sure you get the ball right at 10lbs after you drill the ball then you can request for the exact weight on the order. Either enter in the specs box or on the customer comments box on the final review page that you want a 10lb 2oz - 10lb-3oz ball.

Question:

I am 82 what kind of ball do I need

10/9/2019 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

You would probably need a ball that gets down the lane well before hooking so the ball does not hook too early. Most pearl bowling balls have good length so this is a good option. You also want to make sure the ball is designed to work in the same lane conditions that you bowl in most of the time. This ball was for medium to lighter oil.

Question:

I’m hesitant to buy this ball because of the fragrance. How strong is it. Would the people I’m bowling with notice the fragrance or just me when I’m bowling?

1/23/2020 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

The fragrance can be a little strong at first when the ball is brand new. We have had some people say that other people around them can smell the fragrance but after you bowl some with the ball it will start to fade down and not be as strong.

Question:

Hook strength

6/14/2021 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

This is an entry performance ball so the hook potential is not very high. This helps the ball to work well in lighter oil conditions. In light oil it will have a medium amount of hook but when you compare this to all the performance balls it has a low amount of hook potential.

Question:

How would this compare to the Brunswick Twist ?

8/4/2021 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

They are going to be very comparable and will both work in medium to drier lane conditions. Brunswick technically has 2 options for entry performance in the Twist and Rhino series and there is not a big difference in these three bowling balls.
