United States dominates mixed doubles at TOA

The United States team had a banner day at the 52nd Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas on Thursday, winning the gold medal in all five divisions in the mixed doubles event.

Team USA members Brittni Hamilton and Rob Gotchall teamed up to win the Adult division with a six-game total of 2,550 at Strikers Lanes in Sunrise, Fla. The other U.S. Adult pairing of Holly Harris and AJ Johnson finished ninth with 2,240.

In the Junior A division, Junior Team USA's Julia Bond joined with Andrew Anderson to claim the gold medal with 2,398. Breanna Clemmer and Ronnie Fujita combined to earn the silver medal with 2,378.

It was another one-two sweep for the United States in the Junior B division with Leah Glazer and Cortez Schenck shooting 2,326 to take the top spot. Ashley Channell and Sean Wilcox teamed up to shoot 2,249 and take the silver medal.

USBC Hall of Famers Tish Johnson and Rick Steelsmith topped the Senior division to win the gold medal with 2,405, while teammates Karen Barcal and Larry Porter totaled 2,341 to earn the silver medal.

The U.S. picked up a pair of medals in the Super Senior division with Carol Teel and Sam Carter earning the gold medal with 2,336 and Jesslyn Rhoades and Jack Nelson taking the bronze with 2,179.

Team event gets started with the opening six of nine games Friday and the tournament wraps up with the final four games Saturday.

The Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas, the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone, is a week-long invitational competition for countries in the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON), the American Zone of the World Tenpin Bowling Association.

In each division, one team comprised of two men and two women compete in singles, doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team. After 34 games, individual all-events and national all-events champions are recognized.
