Great ball

I purchased this ball for heavy oiled lanes I bowl on. My old ball wasn't cutting it anymore and this one hooks like a ball should. Always good prices on bowling.com and one to two day delivery. It's a great website.

I will consider buying storm bowling bowl products always.

Bought this Alpha Crux 16lbs ball with a maximum top weight for an upcoming bowling sweepers in Gold Coast, Las Vegas (June 2016). Had it drilled by a professional bowler and driller (Jim Starks) perfectly fit my fingers and bowling style. Did practice for six games and bowled a high game of 262 prior going to Vegas. Bowled in Gold Coast for our sweepers using this Storm Alpha Crux and amazingly bowled a perfect 300 on the first game, 267 second game, and 227 on a third game with a total series of 794. With all my winnings, I got my money back buying this ball and still have extra $$ on my pocket. This is my best bowling game I ever had so far. All I can say is that this Storm Alpha Crux rocks and will definitely a good arsenal to have for competition.

Best ball I've ever used. Love it!!

It kills on heavily oiled lanes!! I love it. I can pretty much bowl it from anywhere and it'll recover. Beautiful ball and a must have. #2thumbsup

Dead ball after 15 games

The alpha crux is way overrated for league play. If you work a stroker shot this ball works for 15 games and then is dead. Worst purchase i have ever made.

Seems all Storm products need constant resurface weekly to be consistent- i've lost 25 pins sincenmoving from Hammer to Storm

So disappointed. I was throwing the ball so well and it was snapping back beautiful. But then it died.

Bottom Line:

When new the most awesome ball ever but then ---

When new out of the box up to 6-8 months the ball is nothing but spectacular ,on both wood and synthetic lanes will destroy the pins . Then even after proper maintenance and around 4-5 league play- the ball goes dead and no movement and no pin carry. Only ever seen two other storm balls do it- The storm pearl IQ tour(no longer in production) and the Alpha Crux.

What a Ball

Love this ball. I really drives through heavy oil. I'm a senior citizen and need extra help moving through oil and this ball delivers. I highly recommend this ball. Shot 626, 659, and 656 the first 3 times I used it.

Pros:
Strong and predictable reaction
Cons:
Regular maintenance required
Bottom Line:

Love this ball, but it does soak up the oil.

As previous reviewers have stated, this ball is exceptional out of the box but the ball does go flat after 40 or so games. I have over 250 games on this ball and I use my food dehydrator on it every week. The dehydrator extracts the oil from the ball without having to resurface. I find that if I do this, especially after bowling heavy oil patterns, the ball performs as expected every time.

I am not a heavy cranker which may be why I have to be meticulous about removing the absorbed oil.

As for my game, my last ball was a storm XXX, old I know, and I averaged 193 with a 279 high game. I took a 10 year bowling break and upon return I purchased the Alpha Crux. I'm now averaging 215 with multiple 299's, 290's, ect... Haven't gotten that elusive 300, but it is definitely right around the corner.

Definitely recommend this ball.

Customer Questions & Answers  |  Reviews

Question: What will it do on the lane when the oil breaks down?

3/4/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hi, it is hard to say definitively how a ball will react as the oil breaks down because there are so many variables. We can say for sure that you should keep as much oil off of the ball as you can by using accessories to do so, and then know you will have to adjust your target for each shot as you get into the later games.

3/7/2016 - By

Question: Should I wipe the ball off every time before I throw it?

3/8/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hi, we would suggest you wipe off the ball before each shot. This is especially helpful with solid coverstock bowling balls, and the amount of oil they tend to soak up.

3/9/2016 - By

Question: If I already own the Crux, Should I purchase the Alpha Crux as well?

3/10/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hi, the Alpha Crux will be able to handle a little more oil than the Crux and it also reads a little earlier so it can give you a different look on the lanes. It will depend on your arsenal but because it reads different and can handle heavier oil, it could still fit in your arsenal with the Crux.

3/10/2016 - By

Question: I currently have 2 Eternal Cells and would like to get a third. First two are obviously layed out different. How would you lay out a third one with a 4 inch pin to get the maximum flip at the backend? I have one that gets through their heads very very clean and gives me a nice clean snap, I want to similar length but a stronger reaction. Who would you suggest for a layout?

3/17/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hello, you may check with the person who will be drilling this ball for you prior to ordering to determine which layout and specs they would use to get you the desired reaction.

3/17/2016 - By

Question: I'm a stroker and alread Own the Optimus Perl which gets lost in heavy oil, will the Alpha help?

3/17/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: The Alpha Crux is designed for heavier oil conditions so it would work better in heavier oil. It is a duller finished ball and designed to read the lanes earlier so it will be a different reaction when compared to the Optimus Pearl which is designed to break later on the lanes.

3/17/2016 - By

Question: What's top weight mean for your ball?

4/5/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Top weight is the weight difference measured from the top of the bowling ball compared to the bottom of the ball. You may check with the person who will be drilling this ball for you prior to ordering to determine which layout and specs they would use to get you the desired reaction.

4/6/2016 - By

Question: I bought an Alpha Crux to use on heavy oil. When I threw it, it did nothing. I returned to the pro shop. He used a abralon pad on it and said that I'd have to keep it scuffed for the ball to break. What's wrong with this ball?

4/14/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Thanks for the question. Without knowing more about your game it is difficult to know if there is something wrong with the ball or if the out of the box finish just does not match up well with your speed or style of bowling. There are a lot of people who alter the finish of the ball with sanding pads and/or polish to best meet their needs.

4/14/2016 - By

Question: What the hook potential on the Alpha Crux?

4/14/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: The Alpha Crux has a Flare Potential of 6" Plus (High) which gives it a very high hook potential. Out-of-the-box this is the strongest hooking ball that Storm has in its current line up.

4/14/2016 - By

Question: Is this a good ball for 2 handed bowlers?

4/18/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Great question! This is a great ball for a two handed bowler. If you look at the videos for this ball there is a two handed bowler demonstrating how the ball works. Hope this helps!

4/19/2016 - By

Question: How does this compare to the Gravity Nano?

5/21/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hello Reb! It will move earlier and hook more aggressively than the Gravity Nano.

5/24/2016 - By

Question: How does this ball compare to the Lock?

5/31/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: The Alpha Crux is designed to hook earlier on the lanes and be a little stronger than the Lock which would read a little later on the lanes.

6/2/2016 - By

Question: Bowling on Dead Mans Curve and The Autoban this summer. Need equipment advise. Thinking maybe Alpha Crux. Looking for suggestions.

6/5/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hello Phil! If you're going to be bowling on a lot of oil, this would be a great ball for that. The Alpha Crux is the most aggressive ball in Storm's line.

6/8/2016 - By

Question: How heavy is the hook on this ball? Does it only hook with fingertip grip or does it hook with conventional as well?

6/17/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: This ball is currently the most aggressive hooking ball in the Storm line. You can get this ball to hook with conventional grip but most pro-shops would recommend a finger tip drill pattern to help you have a cleaner release that may be able to generate more revs on the ball.

6/17/2016 - By

Question: I am a league bowler with 145-150 average. I'm looking for a Storm that has a medium hook on low to med oil lanes

7/9/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hello! This ball would probably not be the one for you. I would suggest taking a look at either the Storm Match or the Storm Match Pearl.

7/11/2016 - By

Question: I just bought the storm lock and was wondering if the ball s surface can be changed for more oil ?

7/26/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hello Fred! Yes, you could sand the ball down with an even lower grit pad, but out of the box, the ball is already one of the most aggressive on the market for heavier oil patterns.

7/26/2016 - By

Question: I have the storm iq fusion and was wondering if this ball will do more for me in short and long patterns I tend to hook good with the iq but when the pattern get longer I have a hard time getting back to the pocket just wondering if the alpha crux would be the choice ball for me thanks

8/28/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hello! This might be a good ball for you. This ball would move earlier on the lane and would be significantly more aggressive than the Tour Fusion. So it would be able to handle the higher amounts of oil a lot more easily.

8/29/2016 - By

Question: How would this ball do on a 42' THS? I'm a 2 hand player with a speed of 16.5 at the deck and usually play from board 21 to 5. Would I be better off with the snap lock?

9/22/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: When you are trying to find a ball that matches your style is is good to look at your speed and rev rate. A 2 handed bowler will typically have a very high rev rate but your ball speed is pretty average so you are more of a rev dominant player. For a rev dominant player you may want a ball that gets more length like the Snap Lock so the ball can get down the lane far enough before it takes off with your revs being so high. The Alpha Crux is a great piece but you may not be able to use it for long because as the lanes start drying down, this ball will really start jumping earlier on for you.

9/29/2016 - By

Question: How would you compare the Alpha Crux to my Storm Byte? I am a tweener and am not getting as much drive into the pocket as I would like on heavy/long oil.

9/27/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: The biggest difference is going to be the length and entry angle. The Alpha Crux is designed to read more midlane with a smoother hook reaction. The Byte was designed to go longer and stores all of the hook in the backend to have a sharper backend hook. If you have the Byte now, you could try a duller finish on that ball to see if you notice any improvement on how the reaction works for you. If you see improvement then the Alpha Crux would be a step in the right direction. If you do not see improvement they you may need to go the other direction for something with more length and maybe a little weaker hook.

10/3/2016 - By

Question: If i polish up the crux, will it snap harder of the spot on the backend?

11/14/2016 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: If you polish any bowling ball, it should make the ball go longer on the lanes and give it more of a backend hook because it will make the ball store its hook until later on the lanes. The down side is that the ball will not usually be able to handle as much oil so you can get this to hook more on the backend but it would be more for medium to heavy oil when you do this instead of just strictly heavy oil.

11/15/2016 - By

Question: How does this ball compare to the Mako? Compare it as though they have the same drilling. Thanks

1/10/2017 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Hello Nick. The Track Mako will have the exact same lane conditions, coverstock, hook potential and performance as the Storm Alpha Crux.

1/11/2017 - By

Question: Looking for a new bowling bowl and have my eye on the Storm Alpha Crux. Would this be right ball ? I am a speed dominate bowler, 17.5 to 20 mph. My delivery is from the far right side and is basically going straight then a slight curve and into the pocket. Thinking because of the speed the bowl goes, it does not have enough time to grab the lanes. So would the Alpha Crux grab the lane earlier enough for me to have more curve in my delivery ?

1/18/2017 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: Yes! You are on the right track. With a speed dominant player the ball will usually not have much time to react and if you have a late breaking ball is has even less time so you may not end up seeing much movement. If you go for a duller finished ball or something designed to read earlier (like the Alpha Crux) the ball will be able to read in the oil earlier on the lane and start moving early enough for you to see a good amount of hook.

1/19/2017 - By

Question: So i'm a two-handed bowler with very high speed and rev rate and i'm currently using the Storm Timeless. How differently would this ball react and would it be worth the buy?

3/20/2017 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer: In the second video listed for this ball, the bowler is using both hands and has a very high speed and high rev rate. This ball will be more comparable to the Storm Sure Lock than the Timeless.
