This is used to go in the thumb hole so your not directly feeling core material or coverstock material. They will drill a hole out in the thumb and put the slug in there and you would use that like you would use an insert. If you drill a hole in the ball, you can feel the core material and with a thumb slug it will make it a smoother feel.
