Hammer continues to make the stuff of legends. The Black Widow Red Legend Solid takes the proven history of the Black Widow line and continues to turn it up a notch. This bowling ball offers unparalleled mid-lane and backend continuation for a spectrum of bowlers with increased traction on medium to heavy oil conditions. The solid Juiced coverstock and the Gas Mask core used for this ball make a ball will be legendary! This bowling ball is Carbon Fiber Infused! Carbon fiber is one of the toughest materials on earth. Hammer decided to add this material to the inner core of this ball for added strength and durability allowing them to offer an incredible 3 year warranty.
Here is my review of the new Red Legend Solid by Hammer- scheduled to be released in early August. This new Legend features one of the best cores ever designed by Hammer- the Gas Mask core (used in the original Widows and Taboos) wrapped in the Juiced reactive cover. Like all Hammer bowling balls manufactured with the Carbon Fiber process, this ball comes with an industry leading 3 year warranty. This is the same ball that Bill O'Neill used to win this year's PBA King of Swing event shown last month on ESPN.
I drilled my Red Legend Solid with a 55 x 6 x 40 layout. (no weight hole) I have left this ball at box surface and have tried it on THS, Scorpion, WTBA Paris and Wolf.
By far, this is the strongest Widow Legend made to date. What makes this ball special, I believe, is that even at box surface (500 Abralon- 2000 Abralon) the ball glides through the fronts very easily. Many times, with factory dull equipment, surface changed are required in order to get the ball to clear the front and conserve enough to recover in the back and carry. Not so with this new Red Legend Solid however- I could easily stand left, send it right watch it strongly recover in the backend. Notwithstanding the box surface, because this ball gets through the front easily I found the hitting power of this ball to be nothing short of amazing- following in the great Hammer tradition with balls made with the Widow/Taboo/Widow Legend core.
That being said, because this ball is so strong in the back, I believe this ball will be best suited for heavy volume patterns and longer distances. I had my best success with this ball on Scorpion and WTBA Paris which are both longer distance patterns. I was able to force the ball to work on Wolf by tricking my hand- but it would not be my ball of choice as it put me at a bad angle in the front and any miss left did not yield any hold. For a shorter or light volume pattern, I would suggest one of the pieces from the Hammer Flare, Viral, or Spike series.
Like with almost every Widow/Taboo/Widow Legend, this new Red Legend Solid will match up with many styles and rev rates. It can also be drilled to achieve many different ball motions.

The Red Legend SOLID is a stronger version of the Red Legend Pearl with the Juiced coverstock which can be used in the heavier lane patterns. This ball compliments the previous two Black Widow balls in this series (Legend & Red Legend). With the strong Juiced solid coverstock, still gets this ball gets through the front part of the lane with ease, and provides a very strong mid-lane hook with a continuous motion in the backends. I saw the Red Legend Solid is about 4-6 boards stronger overall than the original Legend with the same surface prep (2000)!
BALL LAYOUT: 65 x 4 3/4 x 60
For me, this ball burned up a little too much for me on the lighter house shot & a few lighter oil patterns, since the coverstock was a little too strong & for my rev rate. I need to have a little more head oil in which is non-existence where I bowl down here. Therefore, I would recommend it for medium heavier patterns.
I think the Red Legend Solid has a great motion that does not stop rolling in the backend – it really continues through the pin deck! Very versatile ball… You will be impressed!
Great for power play
I just bought this ball and used it right out of the box. I bowled a 226 with it right off the rip. Then a 243. My current league average is 189. My old ball was a Morich Total Shock and Awe that I purchased about 10 years ago. Major difference in pin carry with this new ball. Looking forward to league night with it :)
This ball was a waste of money
The new Hammer Legend Solid is the most versatile legend yet. The solid cover gives the bowler midlane with the legend backend motion. The new solid is very controllable ball motion with the legendary backend motion. If you are having any trouble with the original legends going to long on some patterns, then the new Solid is your ball of choice. I cant say enough about the midlane and controllable ball motion of the Solid. The Solid legend is best legend so far in my opinion, with today's lane conditions you need control. The Legend Solid is strong controllable ball motion that works great on medium to longer lane patterns. You still get the Hammer legendary backend ball motion in the Solid. The solid comes with the 3 year warranty.
Likes:Holy hook in a box. For me this is the strongest ball in Hammer's line. I drilled mine 50 x 5 x 35 and this ball is strong. This ball is very early for me but still has good back end continuation.
Dislikes:This ball is too much for me on our house shot. It needs oil!!!
BALL WEIGHT: 14#
REV RATE: 435
BALL SPEED: 17.5
DUAL ANGLE LAYOUT: 75 x 5 3/8 x 30
PATTERN TYPE: Sport
BALL SURFACE: FACTORY
LIKES: Box finish, solid color, strong continuation.
The big change with this ball is the cover stock, with this release having a solid reactive shell. The red Juiced cover stock is finished with a 2000 Abralon pad. This is by far the smoothest of the previous Widow releases, even though I feel it is less angular than the last 2 releases in BW line, this ball still provides a lot of down lane motion and a earlier read on med to heavy oil patterns. It was super easy to control pocket even as the pattern changed. Red legend solid will provide more total hook than the previous two Legends because of cover change and box finish. This is by far my favorite release in the line so far!
