In all sports there are certain unspoken rules and etiquettes that come with the territory. When it comes to bowling it is important to respect the people bowling with you and around you as well as the equipment and lanes. Here are a few bowling etiquette do’s and don'ts to keep in mind next time you go to the alley.

Have Proper Equipment

In every bowling alley you are REQUIRED to wear bowling shoes. When you check in you can typically rent shoes or if you have your own pair you are welcome to use those. If you are an avid bowler I don't need to explain the technical aspect of how bowling shoes improve your game.

If you stop in every once in awhile with your family to play a round or two you may wonder why you need to wear bowling shoes. By renting shoes it keeps dirt and debris off of the lanes and keeps them in good shape. Although the shoes are used by multiple people they are not worn outside at all so you won't track in dirt with them.

Be Aware of People Around You

One of the best things about bowling is that you can do it with people of all ages and abilities. If you are going out with small children you want to make sure to teach your kids proper bowling safety. The lanes are very close together so be aware of the people who are bowling next to you and sharing a ball return. Typically the unspoken rule is to let the person in the right lane go first if you are about to roll at the same time.

If you are an adult going out to have a couple drinks, that’s awesome, just be sure to keep your language PG in case there are children around. Everyone is there to have a good time so it is just good to be aware of your surroundings and the company around you!

Clean Up

Be sure to throw away any trash or containers that are in your area and return your ball to the rack where you found it. This will ensure that the lanes stay neat and tidy and they will be all ready for use after you finish.

All of bowling etiquette comes down to respecting the lanes and respecting the people around you. If you do that then you will have no problems. If you have questions about rules or need help with anything there are always people around to help put up bumpers or set up your screen, all you need to do is ask! Keep these tips in mind when you are bowling and be sure to have fun!
