Does the handle collapse so this will fit in my trunk without the thick section still extended?

Answer:
The handle will retract down pretty close to even with the top bag, maybe just slightly lower. If you remove the top bag the handle will not retract down any further so it will be sticking up pretty high above the platform that the top bag sits on.
