Roto Grip Gem

The look and performance of this high-performance bowling ball make it nothing less than a Gem. Not only is the core in this ball noteworthy but the coverstock is the extremely aggressive MicroTrax Solid Reactive. Great length, sharp back end

Best Uses:

first ball out my bag, Oily lanes

Bottom Line:

1st ball out the bag

I have it pin up, off to the right of ring finger. Goes very long with a wicked delayed backend. I'm a stroker, straight up 8 board..it holds the line very well thru 3 games.

Pros:

Aggressive coverstock, Sharp hook through pocket

Cons:

More sensitive and prone to over reacting, Requires quick adjust to changing conditions.

Best Uses:

Heavy Oil, Tournament Conditio

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great for this medium rev bowler!

- A Great asymetric core with awesome visuals for tracking rotation down the lane. The 2000Abralon finish does a great job plowing through heavy oil conditions, like a Sportshot league or tournament pattern. I have a 15lb and a 16lb that makes it easier for me than adjusting the release. Both ball weights have a sharp break that carries nicely through the pocket. Ball can get squirrely on dry lanes or when the lanes begin to break down. Requires a bit more attention to keep it clean and keeping the oil out of the coverstock.

Good ball from heavy to medium oil

Texas Open Tournement, May 28-29, 2022

In am currently have a 203 average in tournaments. I am a stroker/fingertip style bowler. In Austin the lanes appeared to affected by humidity. But once I found my line, I was getting the high pin counts. During double/singles events, I bowled a high 233 during the morning and a 248 during the evening.

On Sunday, while at the Georgetown lanes, I bowled 60 pins over my total average. During the afternoon, I bowled eight pins over my total average, due to some missed lines and or spares. I could have gotten a higher total average with this bowling ball.

Overall, this ball consistently worked for me on the long patterns. I see a possibily of needing to bowl more to the inside with this ball on league/house shots. But, glad I got this ball just in time for my tournament.

Wow

Wow. I picked my Gem up last night and Roto Grip nailed it. I am admittedly a Roto Grip fan but this ball does things that nothing else in my bag can do. Easily the strongest ball I have ever rolled. Looking forward to it's debut on league night.

Question:

Would this ball be good for high rev players? I like too buy weaker balls because of my high rev rate.

2/1/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

This ball would be good for someone with a high ball speed but if you have a high rev rate this ball is already designed to have a high hook potential so you may only be able to use this in the highest oil conditions.

Question:

I have the zenith. How would this compare. As well as being a low speed bowler?

2/19/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

This ball would be most similar to the Zenith Solid. I am not sure which Zenith you have but this has a duller finish and solid cover to help it react earlier on the lanes. If you have a slower ball speed you may prefer a ball that gives you more length.

Question:

What is the difference between the gem and the nova

2/20/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

The Roto Grip Gem is going to read a little earlier on the lane and because of this it will also have a slightly higher overall hook potential.

Question:

How does this ball do in medium to light oil

3/3/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

This ball would be too strong to use on medium to lighter oil. It would react too strong too early and not continue down the lane.

Question:

Could you put a little polish on it to longer

3/9/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Yes, adding polish would make this ball react later on the lanes and give it a sharper backend hook.

Question:

What is difference between the gem and nova

5/10/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

The Gem is going to read earlier than the Nova to give it a smoother arcing hook. The solid coverstock on the Gem reads earlier than the hybrid cover on the Nova and also the duller finish on the Gem helps it to start hooking earlier.

Question:

I’m a lefty, i role a fast straight ball. Will this ball help me get to the pocket once I place on my mark

5/12/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

If you are speed dominant then this could be a good option for you as the ball is designed to start reading earlier on the lane for a smoother arcing hook. If you do not have a high rev rate then this ball could work for you on medium to heavy oil and being that you are left handed the left side of the lanes tends to hold oil longer because less bowlers are left handed and it will not dry out as quickly because there is less traffic on that side of the lane.

Question:

I am looking for a replacement ball is a slightly lighter weight for my original Hyper Cell. How does this ball compare to the Hyper Cell? Similar specs?

5/15/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

In the current Roto Grip line the Gem would be the most comparable to the Hyper Cell. Both have a solid reactive cover and 2000 grit finish to help them read earlier on the lanes for a smoother arcing hook and both work in heavier oil conditions. The other options to check would be a Storm Proton Physix and a 900Global Reality.

Question:

Hi have a lot of ball speed not a whole lot of revs woukd this ball be good for me

5/17/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

Yes, this would be good for someone who was speed dominant. The ball is designed to try and read the lanes earlier so if you have a high speed you want to make sure the ball reads earlier so it has enough time to react.

Question:

With ball is stronger motiv trident or roto grip gem

7/15/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

The Gem will read slightly earlier than the Trident would and this may give it a slight higher overall hook but it would be very very close. Both are high performance balls and both are designed to work in heavier oil conditions. They are very comparable in performance.

Question:

I just got this ball lass week, and i throuh a 719 for 3 game.how maney game should i bowl before taking it to the pro shop to get servis.and whot should thsy be useding .

7/17/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

We hope it brings you some more high scores. If you start to notice that the ball is not performing as well as you would like then you can take it to your proshop for service. It will help if you use a towel in between shots to keep the oil and dirt off the ball as much as possible and if you have a cleaner to use at the end of each night that can help the ball last longer.

Question:

How would this ball react for a two hander who throws 16lbs with high revs and high speed?

9/21/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

This ball is a high performance ball with a high hook potential in heavy oil and reads in the midlane. If your ball speed and rev rate are both high you will still get this reaction but you may get slightly more length and a slightly higher hook potential than an average bowler. So that would make this really only good in heavier oil for you.

Question:

How does this ball compare to the Motiv Iron Forge and the Storm Incite?

10/2/2022 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

This ball will read much earlier than the Iron Forge and noticeably earlier than the Incite. The stronger midlane read will help it to have a smoother arcing hook and this also helps this ball handle heavier oil conditions better.

Question:

I throw my ball between 14 to 16 mph with med revs. My house avg is 180. My go to ball is a ghost jackal which is great for dryer lanes when I go to state competitions the lanes are very oily, would this ball help me on the back end to get higher scores? Thanks in advance!

2/11/2023 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

The solid coverstock and duller finish can help the Gem work better in heavy oil conditions. The Ghost Jackal is also rated to be able to handle some heavier oil conditions but if you do not get the reaction you like with this then you may prefer something like the Gem which will have more grip in the midlane to be able to rev earlier in heavy oil.

Question:

Is the gem a high Rev ball?

1/29/2024 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

If you have a high ball speed to match your high rev rate then you could use the Gem in heavy oil conditions. However, if you ball speed is average or slower, this may be a hard ball to use for a rev dominant player and you may consider a ball with more length like a pearl coverstock and/or polished finish.

Question:

What's the best ball for low Revs?

1/29/2024 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

For an average ball speed and average rev rate this ball would work well in heavier oil conditions. If you are more rev dominant this ball may be harder to control because it was already very aggressive but if you are more speed dominant this would work well for you and you may could even use this in medium to heavy oil conditions.

Question:

I am doing the two handed approach. I have a few 14lb balls (Proton Physix and Gem). But I have a hard time hitting my pocket. The ball goes Brooklyn a lot. I know I can speed up my steps, bowl straighter or use a ball that hooks less but I have a good speed and release that I like. So if we keep everything exactly the same, would it make sense to get a lighter ball (13lb) balls instead so I can push the ball down more with less physical force and hitting the pocket more often? With 14lb balls I feel I have to use so much force but still hit Brooklyn. Thanks!

2/5/2024 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

I would probably recommend keeping the same weight but getting a ball that is less aggressive. With your release you may be getting a very high rev rate and if you match this with a high performance ball you are likely to keep seeing the ball hook too much. You may consider something that is more mid performance like a Roto Grip Hyped Solid here: https://www.bowling.com/products/roto-grip-hyped-solid.htm

Question:

I am just getting back into bowling and the last ball I had was the Roto Grip SD73. I am trying to decide between the Gem and the Attention Star. Which one would you recommend for a high speed bowler.

4/25/2024 - By

Have an answer to this question?

Answer:

I think the Gem would be a better fit if you have a higher ball speed. The duller finish and solid cover on the Gem help the ball read quicker and you may need this if your speed is higher to get the ball to still have time to hook on the lanes. The SD73 had a similar duller finish out of the box so if you like the reaction of that, you would like the Gem better than the Attention Star.
